Culture: Why Madonna and other Celebrities Ought to be Conservative

So I’m passing through my bedroom  in the rushed, morning ritual of getting 3 kids to schools on different campuses, at slightly varying times – this keeps it exciting – and a story on the morning news catches my attention.  (I leave the TV on while I dart in and out of my room hoping to stay connected to the outside world).  The story highlights Madonna’s support of a boycott of the Winter Olympics in Russia in protest of the Communist regime’s imprisonment of the female rock band, “P*ssy Riot.”  In fairness to the context of the story, I am not sure if the band’s imprisonment was the result of the Russian government’s attempt to (a) squelch their “First Amendment” rights (recall the First Amendment in America’s Bill of Rights guarantees five freedoms, one of which is freedom of expression); or (b) punish their lawless behavior – specifically, staging a raunchy riot in a church, no doubt vandalizing someone else’s property.  We’ll leave the topic of rights having corresponding responsibilities, like respect, for another discussion.

The first order of business it seems would be to remind Madonna that the incident occurred in Russia not America!  The American regime is unique among all the nations in that it is founded on the belief of the equal, natural rights of individuals.  This is what is meant by “American Exceptionalism” – America is the exception to the rule.  In America, uniquely, (we believe) government exists to secure these equal, natural rights, our Declaration of Independence eloquently states.  Hence, the Russian band enjoys no “First Amendment” protection because freedom of expression – or any other kind of freedom – is not guaranteed in a Communist regime.  (For a list of Communist regimes – past/present – consult Wikipedia or the t-shirt collections of many celebrities).  The collective State is supreme in such regimes NOT the individual.  And they employ force – not consent – to govern.  I submit the band’s two-year prison sentence and Obamacare penalties, as evidence. (force = employing the power of the state/gov’t. to ensure compliance)

Which brings me to my point about the ideology/politics of celebrities.  These are the people who make their living and whose vocation IS self expression – “the First Amendment incarnate.”  They should be the standard-bearers of the American regime AND free enterprise, which simply put, is freedom of expression in the marketplace.  In other words, celebrities ought to be Conservative not Progressive (synonym for liberal but more positive sounding).  Conservatives believe in the preservation of the Constitutionally-defined role of government, embraced in the American founding; Progressives want to get past or “progress beyond” this pre-defined role of government, in favor of an ever-expanding government role.

Culture: Is LeBron James Conservative?

Closet Conservative?Flipping through the pages of my recent People Magazine – a guilty pleasure since I was a freshman in college and received the subscription as a gift – a page entitled “Celebrity Wedding Crashers” caught my attention.  The layout featured various celebrities that had happened upon a wedding underway and stopped to pose with the beaming newlyweds.  I couldn’t help but notice the snapshot of NBA star player, LeBron James, sandwiched between a newlywed couple in Miami.  Though partially obscured, the bold caption on his Nike t-shirt displayed a clear message:  “EARNED NOT GIVEN” with the “O” in the word “NOT” confidently replaced by the NBA championship ring.

I assume since Mr. James is sporting the t-shirt  he identifies with and even endorses its message professionally as well as personally.  Having reached the pinnacle in his chosen profession it’s likely that the only thing Mr. James was “given” was God-given talent;  and that his notable achievements are attributable to years of personal discipline, hard work, sacrifice and perseverance.  Furthermore, his significant wealth – the ‘fruit of his labor’ – is made possible in a free market or capitalistic system.

While I do not know Mr. James’ politics I am willing to bet that he considers himself liberal or progressive (hint:  they’re synonyms), which is the predominant rule among the celebrity ranks.  But what is politics but the combination of one’s moral and social character.  Endowed with the gift of reason, human beings are both capable of and compelled to discover truth.  Through his actions Mr. James reveals his character, leading any reasonable person to conclude:

The truth of the matter is LeBron James is conservative.

Liberty Sense: Is This Progress?

Screen shot 2013-04-19 at 2.49.12 PMHow have Bostonians gone from firing “the shot heard ’round the world” to being on “house arrest” with their city in “lockdown” in slightly over 200 years? Interestingly enough, it is 238 years almost exactly to the day.  Revere’s legendary ride took place April 18, 1775.  It’s hard to imagine how different history would have been had Paul Revere sought cover instead of riding through the New England countryside upon hearing that danger was approaching.  Even more ironic is the fact that the danger was the British army coming to disarm the patriots, thereby stripping them of one of their natural rights.  Gun control anyone?

The answer is simple:  this is “progress”.  Massachusetts is one of the most progressive  states in the country.  Partisan labels are unhelpful and nondescript in getting to the heart of the matter.  Basically, Americans can be divided into two philosophical camps – Conservatives and Progressives – each of which is best understood  in the context of the Constitution.

The Constitution was born of the Revolutionary experiment that ushered in a “new order for the ages” (Novus Ordo Seclorum – see back of $1 bill).  It consists of the fundamental and abiding principles that prescribe the optimal arrangement of political power to achieve a government of, by and for the people.  Conservatives believe in the preservation of that constitutionally-defined role of government embraced in the American founding.  Progressives seek to move or “progress” beyond the constitutionally-defined role of government in favor of an ever expanding government role.

Progressivism subverts the power of the individual to the collective state.  It erases the common cause of America reflected in the phrases “E Pluribus Unum” (from many to one – also on back of $1 bill) and “melting pot” and replaces it with “multiculturalism”.  Emphasis becomes what divides us instead of what unites us.  And we are to believe this is “progress”.
